Thousands flock to buy ‘healing potion’, 52 die waiting in 16 mile queue
Arusha, Tanzania (AHN) – A retired pastor selling a herbal concoction believed to heal any ailment attracted 6,000 people to his remote home in Tanzania with the queue stretching 16 miles. Some 52 sick and elderly people have already died waiting in line for days and the huge crowd disturbed other villages prompting the witchdoctor to call for a timeout.
Rev. Ambilikile “Babu” Mwasapile, 76, called for a stop to new arrivals to Samunge village near the northern Loliondo town until Friday to serve those in front of the queue and lessen the crowd.
Rumors of the healing power of the herb-and-water concoction of the retired Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania pastor have been spreading the past month drawing a crowd of sick people to his home, some coming from the neighboring country of Kenya.
The roadside crowd endured lack of shelter, toilet and clean water for days just to buy the homebrewed miracle potion Mwasapile sells for 30 cents a cup.
Mwasapile claims that his potion can cure AIDS, cancer, diabetes, high-blood pressure and other ailments.
Tanzanian authorities have tested the brew that tastes like tea and found it safe to drink.
