How to Save Money on Medication Costs
In this article today I would like to talk about several tips, tricks, and tactics that you can use right away to help lower the costs of medications.
Right now there is a debate raging through the halls of power in Washington DC over health care. The Democrats, led by the president of the United States want to create a brand-new government run healthcare system while the Republicans on the other hand are fiercely opposed to any government run plan whatsoever.
Whichever side of the aisle you fall under ideologically speaking, one thing that we can absolutely all agree on is the fact that health care costs are spiraling out of control, making it difficult if not impossible for many of us to afford even the simplest forms of health care. And one part of health care that has become especially difficult for many people is the rising cost of medications and that’s what I want to talk about in this article today.
Luckily there are several things you can do to help lower the cost of medications.
The first thing you can do is order medications for chronic conditions by mail-order or even online. Sometimes you can find medications up to 10% and even sometimes 15% cheaper by mail or online. The A.A.R.P. actually has a mail-order service for its members and many health care plans and health insurance policies have them as well.
Of course the first thing you should do is check the prices at local pharmacies but then compare them to the cost of ordering by mail or online. You may be surprised that if you find medications cheaper online or by mail, your local pharmacy may match or beat that price in order to keep your business… you just have to discuss it with them and show them in writing the different costs.
Many people suggest purchasing medications online from pharmacies outside of the United States but I do not suggest that you do that under any circumstance. You should always buy your medications from pharmacies within the United States otherwise you may not get the proper dosage or formulation of the drug and you can just never be sure how effective or dangerous it may be.
Another tip that most people are already aware of is to ask your doctor for samples. Doctors receive boxes full of free samples of many different drugs specifically to give them out for free to their patients. Usually all you have to do is ask.
Finally the last tip is to buy generic drugs whenever possible. Purchasing generic drugs can sometimes save you between 50% and even up to 75% off the purchase price of regular non-generic drugs. Unfortunately generic drugs aren’t for everybody and you really have to talk to your doctor before you switch to any sort of generic drug.
So there you have several very simple and very quick and easy tips that you can use to lower the cost of your medications dramatically without relying on the government to get around to making up their mind and passing or not passing health care reform.
